In Awakening, author Tiera Rice successfully captures the voice of Nadia, a modern New York City teenager struggling with her personal identity and journey to adulthood, and simultaneously plunges the both the main character and readers into a world of violent, supernatural forces far beyond the gentle witchcraft upon which she was raised. Readers are also taken back in time to Wallachia (Romania) in the late 1400s and introduced to Antanasia, an incredibly powerful blood drinker who must accept a heavy mantle of her own, and all of the responsibilities that come with it – Princess of a people in the midst of a brutal war. The clear connection between the two heroines is established early on, and it’s easy to fall in love with both of them. Awakening is merciless, and the story will seduce and destroy the reader without hesitation, leaving you grieving along with the heroines, and screaming for retribution as well.
Awakening moves fluidly, easing back and forth between the heroines and across the centuries. Rice seems to pull inspiration from a blend of contemporary vampire fiction, historical vampire lore, and even the modern Goth and Vampyre subcultures. There is just the right amount of intrigue, lust, magick and fighting to satisfy the most hardcore of vamp-fiction / paranormal romance fans. Rice’s novel is a smooth read, a page-turner, and the cliff hanger in the very last sentence leaves you, quite literally, howling for more. Overall, Awakening is an impressive debut and a solid introduction to what promises to be a thriving series.
